Kabul Beauty
School written by
Deborah Rodriguez
In 2002, just months after the Taliban had been
driven out of Afghanistan, Rodriguez, a hairdresser from
Holland, MI, joined a small nongovernmental aid organization
on a mission to the war-torn nation. That visit changed her
life. In Kabul, she chronicles her efforts to help
establish the country's first modern beauty school and
training salon; along with music and kite-flying, hairdressing
had been banned under the previous regime. This memoir offers
a glimpse into a world Westerners seldom see-life behind the
veil. Rodriguez was entranced with the delightful
personalities that emerged when her students removed their
burqas behind closed doors, but her book is also a tale of
empowerment-both for her and the women. In a city with no mail
service, she went door-to-door to recruit students from
clandestine beauty shops, and there were constant efforts to
shut her down. She had to convince Afghan men to work side by
side with her to unpack cartons of supplies donated from the
U.S. The students, however, are the heroines of this memoir.
Women denied education and seldom allowed to leave their homes
found they were able to support themselves and their
families. This is
a fast-moving, engrossing true story and available in hardback
at any major bookstore.

Dear
SI Corona,
I am so excited to introduce to you the
first issue of our e-newsletter. For several years
SI Corona has tried to launch a newsletter and for
different reasons we had not been successful. Well, with
the advance of technology and all the email
communication among our members, things have gotten a
bit easier for us to produce a publication to keep you
all in the loop of what's happening in our club. I hope
you enjoy the stories and the photos and please email us
your articles, stories, photos, cartoons, or whatever
you would like to share with the club members. Remember,
this e-newsletter is being published with you in mind,
so help us make it the best of the
region!!!
Sincerely,
Marcy Decato

President's Message Wow!
What a year it has been. Marcy Decato and I
were able to attend the Biennium Convention in
Philadelphia in July and we were awestruck by 1,500
women from Soroptimist International of the
Americas who were all working toward the same
goal.
We
started off the year meeting during the early summer
months of 2006 to start planning for our Chocolate, Wine and Jazz Festival
to be held on October 28 (my birthday). Thanks
to Debbie Miller and her committee, we had more profit
and more attendance than in years past. This is our one
and only fundraiser and it occurs early in the year so
we don't have to fundraise any other time and we can
concentrate our efforts on our mission of improving the
lives of women and girls in the local communities and
throughout the world.
We then
moved on to awarding our Violet Richardson and Woman of
Opportunity awards to a very deserving woman and girl.
The year, we revamped our Dreams and Decisions
program and we were all a bit anxious to see it
come to fruition. It concluded with a fashion show and
over 200 girls in attendance. Great job by Mary
Aguilar and her committee for "stepping out of the
box".
We were
able to showcase several deserving women in the
community for their efforts to improve the status of
women. One of these women was Kristi Camplin, the
founder/director of Inspire Life Skills, Inc.
She is an incredible woman and her name will be
submitted next year for the Making a Difference for
Women award at both the regional level and
international level and I really believe that we will
have a winner with her.
We
provided high school girls and middle school girls with
scholarships and named a new memorial scholarship after
Past President Marsha Calvert.
Nine of
us attended the Spring Conference which was on a
cruise ship this year and what a fun time that was,
bonding with each other and learning about Soroptimists.
I am
truly humbled to have been the President this last
year. As I write this, it brings tears to my eyes
to see how much we accomplished and how much we have
impacted the lives of women and girls. I couldn't
have done it without my Executive Board, so I thank you
from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for keeping me
on track. Go forth Marcy and lead this great group of
women!

Treasurer's
Report Greetings
from your soon to be ex-treasurer! I just wanted
to remind everyone that your dues should have been paid
by July 1st, which is $155.00. The monthly lunch dues
are to remain $50. If you are a life member, or
are bringing a guest, the cost is $12 for lunch. It's
easier to pay the $12 at the time, instead of having it
applied to your statement because Susan Glenn and I have
found that discrepancies happen then. To make
things easy on new treasuer, Paola, try to keep this in
mind!

Congrats! to Jean Easum for her recent recognition
as a UCR Distinguished Alumni. Also, to Debra Murphy for
her honors from NAWBO (National Association of Women

Bittersweet congrats to Mary Aguilar for her new

position has required her to take a leave of
absence.
Karen Spiegel's father-in-law is recuperating from
heart surgery. Let's wish Herb well. Here is the
latest from the Spiegel's family: "We are pleased to
share that Herb has had his surgery and did very well
with the pacemaker implanted. He is now home and
will be recuperating this next week. He will not
be able to drive for the next 4-6 weeks and must limit
use of his left arm. All and all, his spirits are good
and we look forward to a full recovery soon"!
And let's all keep Cyndi Monroe's son (& Cyndi)
in our thoughts and prayer as he enters into the
Military as an interpreter!
This week Corona City Councilwoman and long time SI

Bobby, a Laurel Society pin in celebration of their

2006
- 2007 Summary
It is not simple to summarize a
Soroptimist year in two or three paragraphs; there are
so many great meetings and events that I would not want
to leave anything out. But for the sake of the space, I
would highlight some for those of you who missed
them:
October 28, 2006 - Chocolate Wine &
Jazz festival: Another great year for our only
fundraising event, we net over $30,000 which allowed us
to help many women and girls in our community.
Congratulations to Debbie Miller and her committee for a
job well done!
December 13, 2006 - Holiday Luncheon: this
year at Sylvia Fleming's beautiful home. Every year this
event brings us together even more and this year was not
different, with the ornament exchange, the excellent
food and that Holiday spirit on the air that always
brings smiles to our faces.
February 28, 2007 - SI Corona
60th birthday: the theme
"Diamonds are a girl's best friend". What a celebration!
Shelly Davis did an awesome job planning and preparing
this event, we gathered at Villa Amalfi with regular and
life members, and those who attended witnessed a couple
of hours of reminiscence from some of the life members.
The gorgeous flower arrangements came from Dana Prechtl
at City Florist of Norco, and we all came home with a
beautiful souvenir "diamond" to make us remember of this
unforgettable day.

celebration, please click this link.
March 3, 2007 - (S.O.S.) Dreams &
Decisions: We commend Mary Aguilar and her committee for
the innovation and the great program they implemented
this year. The theme this year was "Be a Role Model".
The girls were invited to participate in a fashion show
which it was one of the motivations to get them in on a
Saturday. Also three workshops took place: "Taking Good
Care of Me", "Relationships" and "My Space" all of them
given by experts in those fields. We had close to 300
girls attended the workshop.
March 28, 2007 - Making a Difference for
Women and Women Helping Women Awards Luncheon: Co-Chairs
Jean Easum and Karen Spiegel organized this event and
they did a great job selecting and surprising all these
deserving awardees. This luncheon was so full of
emotion, tears, laughs, and love, Isn't that what we are
all about? "Women helping women."
May 23, 2007 -Scholarship & Violet Richardson
Award Luncheon: Seema Lechner chaired the High School
Scholarship Awards, Sylvia Fleming the Intermediate
Scholarship Awards and Tracy Mauser and Linda Holmes
Co-chaired the VRA. Again, more emotion in the room, the
tears running with the stories of these teens that
deserve a hand to help them continue with their
education. The excellent planning, the presenters, the
counselors and especiallythe
students made this event another signature from our
club.
Lastly, let's include in this successful
year of service, all the volunteers who dedicate the
time, the skills, and the efforts for all of these
events to happen. Thank you all, SI Corona members for
your dedication and love to help women and girls and to
make of Soroptimist the "Best for Women"

SI Corona Roses
This year president Shawn Dredla started a
beautiful tradition to offer a rose, a flower, a card,
or something to thank a member who made a difference for
one of us during that particular week. This corner of
the newsletter will be dedicated every month to our
club's roses, so keep track of whom you have honored and
why you did it. We want everyone to know why we are so
special!!!
From Jane Lavin:
I have given roses this year President
Shawn and President Elect Marcy Decato for doing such an
awesome job and being so passionate.
I gave a rose to Mary Aguilar because of
her efforts prior to dreams and decisions.
I gave roses to Denise Hammer because she
was so responsible for me continuing in club and
has always been warm true friend.
I gave roses to Deb Miller because she
handles so much and I just don't get how she does
it!
From Marcy Decato:
I honored my CWJ Marketing Committee
(Cyndi Monroe, Laurie LoFranco and Paola Ringer) for
helping me put together and economic and effective
campaign.
I brought chocolate bars to the Nomination
Committee (Debora Murphy and Debbie Miller) for helping
me with such big responsibility of selecting the
upcoming slate of officers.
I gave a rose to Frances Armenta for
hosting one of our meetings giving us all kinds of make
up tips and colors that go with our skin
tones. |

Life Member:
Marsha Calvert:
Marceline "Marsha" Calvert, who rose from
the poverty of the Depression in Los Angeles to become
the matriarch of a Corona business and political family.
She was born on December 22, 1927 in Los Angeles,
CA. where she spent her childhood and attended local
schools. Her family's home was in the back of a
barbershop on the main road to Los Angeles International
Airport. She attended nursing school in Los Angeles
during World War II, expecting to join the Army. The war
ended, and she ended up being a nurse in Hemet. That's
where she met Ira Calvert, who had a rock and sand
business in Idyllwild. They married in 1949. They moved
to Corona in 1953 and had three sons, Craig, 57, of
Sandy, Ore., and Quint, 57, and Ken, 53, both of Corona.
They are all graduates of the Corona Norco School
District and all graduated from college. Quint recently
retired from teaching at Corona High School. While
raising their children, the Calverts established family
businesses in Corona and opened the Corona Bowl and
Jolly Fox Restaurant. Marsha was very important to
the success of the family businesses as she handled the
accounting.
Marsha was an active member of the
community and had served on the Board of Directors for
the Corona-Norco YMCA, as President of Soroptimist
International of Corona, and as President of the
Corona-Norco Republican Women. Marsha was also a
long-time member of the Corona Chamber of Commerce and
actively involved with the Corona-Norco Navy League.
Marsha was a devoted wife and wonderful mother who
enjoyed reading, golfing and gardening. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Ira "Cal" Calvert, who was
a city councilman, mayor and businessman in Corona.
Marsha passed away on January 17,
2007.
Regular Member
Teresa Costa:
After graduating from Corona High School
in 1980, Teresa Costa attended and received her
Associate of Arts degree from Riverside Community
College in marketing and business, with a minor in
Art.
Teresa's first career desire was to use
her artistic talents in retail design and display,
however things changed after taking her first travel
course offered by her then future mother-in-law in 1984.
She instantly took to the job, and hasn't left the
travel business since.
She married her husband Mark in November
of 1986, and within 4 months purchased Corona Travel
Service from his father. They
quickly became involved within the community, joining
several business and service organizations.
Teresa has been active with Soroptimist
International of Corona since 1986, the American Cancer
Society, the Corona Historic Preservation Society, and
served on many Corona Chamber committees, as well as
helped found the Beautification committee and
President's Circle.
In 1996, Mark and Teresa sold Corona
Travel Service, to launch careers in other avenues of
the travel industry. Quickly, Teresa
was recruited by Classic Vacations, a luxury travel
wholesaler where she was also a Regional Sales
Director.
It was during this time that she was able to
truly develop her destination experience with her many
travels to Hawaii, Mexico, Europe and the
Caribbean.
Even through the trials and tribulations
that 9/11 had on the travel industry; Teresa still
continued to grow professionally with Classic. When her son
Parker began kindergarten, Teresa knew that her life on
the road was going to be too challenging as a parent, so
she decided to go back to what she always loved to do,
which was to assist people with their vacation
plans.
In 2004, Teresa started La Costa Vacations
as a home-based retail travel agency, using her skills
and knowledge in travel planning she had acquired over
the past 23 years. In a consultative setting, Teresa
works with her customers to best fulfill their
expectations of a vacation experience. She focuses on
the value of the vacation, without compromising the
quality of the experience.
In just over 2 years, she has rebuilt her
client loyalty and business, racking up travel sales
exceeding 1 million dollars in 2006.
Teresa is proud to have her business back
in Corona, and with her husband Mark and son Parker
reside in
Corona. | |
